Italy > Umbria > Province of Terni

The province of Terni lies in the heart of Italy. It is known for its breathtaking scenery, rich history and traditional cuisine. The landscape is characterized by mountains and hills interspersed with forests and rivers. The differences in altitude along the river courses allow the production of electrical energy using hydropower, which has led to the creation of several artificial lakes. The province has two important nature and water protection areas. There is evidence that the province was already inhabited in the 2nd millennium BC.

The traditional cuisine of Terni is famous for its simple but delicious dishes made from regional ingredients such as truffles, lentils and wild boar.

Italy’s first steelworks, now Acciai Speciali Terni, was founded in the province in 1884. Due to the presence of the heavy industry and weapons industry in the province, there were several bombings during the Second World War. The city of Terni and its surroundings were almost completely rebuilt after the war. Orvieto and the Marmore waterfalls in particular are world-famous tourist attractions.
