The Emilia-Romagna region has a 4,432,782 inhabitants (as of July 31, 2022) and covers 22,509.67 km². This means that the region has a population density of 196.93 inhabitants/km². The capital is the metropolitan city of Bologna. Half of the landscape is flat and the other half is hilly. In the east is the Adriatic Riviera with the famous beach towns of Rimini and Riccione. The region was already important in Roman times. Emilia-Romagna is the third most prosperous region in Italy after Lombardy and the Aosta Valley. The gross domestic product is above average if compared to the rest of Europe, while the unemployment rate is below average in Italy. Emilia-Romagna is an important location for the Italian automotive industry. The region is home to the sports car manufacturers Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, De Tomaso and Pagani as well as the motorcycle manufacturers Ducati, Moto Morini and Bitoma. Other important industries include mechanical engineering, tile manufacturing, tourism and the food industry. The well-known film series Don Camillo and Peppone is set in the village of Brescello.
